RESPONSIVE MINI CRIT - EVE & ABBAS

In todays session we had to team up with another pair and pitch our ideas to each other in order to get some feedback and to get an idea of each others project. After we had pitched out ideas we then swapped briefs and for the next hour or so worked on each others briefs. This was a very useful session. It taught us the importance of collaboration and the sharing of ideas. We have to learnt to be comfortable with sharing / giving ideas away as this is what the industry is really like. As we came up with ideas to promote the rebranding of the BBC for eve and abbas they were churning out ideas of how we could push our concept further, considering different media and alternate solutions.

Wanted Posters
Create wanted posters for churchill and slap them all round. This would work better somewhere they have these posters tbh.

Face Comparison App
Compare Churchill to your face, gives you a percentage match. All the entrants go onto a leader board. Top  10 entrants win a prize. Kids can photograph anyone they like.

Winston Your Self App
Add aspects of churchill to your photo - hat etc.

Billboard / Posters / Adverts
Use Winstons photo but brand him with the dogs phrases etc...oh yes!! kids know who the dog is this will show the direct link.

Tom & Jerry Style Advert
Winston and dog chasing each other round! WHOS THE ORIGINAL!?

School Competitions - Stamps etc.
Competitions through schools could help to get kids involved and educate them more about churchill. If they win the stamps will go into circulation.

WW2 Propaganda Style Posters
Some sort of WW2 style posters to draw interest. - but maybe the kids won't look at outdated design.

Talk Talk Idea
People send in short clips of themselves that are shown before shows like the xfactor. Target audience will be the people that would watch the shows.

Churchill App
Make an app that allows you to add cigars top hat etc. - make yourself look like winston churchill app. Then get people to send in the results. - Competition with prize

Photo Board Installations
Photo boards like they have at the seaside etc. get kids involved on the street.

Quiz
Some sort of app that also has a quiz about churchill, to increase learning.

Winston Churchill Sweets
Sweets could be a good way of getting kids involved however I think the target audience is a bit too old for this.

Design a Coin Competition
School kids are given the chance to design a LTD edition Churchill coin.! This could be an interesting competition.

Possible Prizes
Win a trip to london for you and your class.
Educational Tour
Car Insurance when they can drive for a year.
Tour of Houses of Parliament etc.
Madam two swords
London Eye
Dungeons
Etc....

After discussing with Mikey about the ideas that were brought up in the session we have decided to expand on our idea and branch out to an app with  different features. We would have a face recognition section which allows you to take a picture of someone and it will compare them to Churchill and you will be given a rating. Then another feature to the app would be to Edit a photo of you add a hat pipe etc. Also a section that allows you to turn your photo into an old school propaganda poster. This would all be on top of our original campaign.

Next we will look into school campaigns and apps, and ways of publicising our campaign. This week we need a final research push to get everything together and then make a start on the designing. We need to work out exactly what our final products will be.

Does your Granddad look like Churchill?

From todays meeting we have decided to go with the "does your granddad look like winston churchill" concept. We think this is both simple and a really good way of getting kids involved. We are thinking that we could plaster huge images of Churchill Round Citys with The caption Does Winston Churchill Look like your granddad, this will display information about him and maybe link to a website that gives people the chance to post pictures of their granddads that look like winston churchill.

Could it be on Facebook, - Advertised there as well.
Twitter etc

We have decided to cut the target audience down by 2 years in order to mainly focus at schools as this will be a direct way into our target audience. School kids are more likely to get involved with something like this if it is handed out in the environment. Maybe the chance to win something will spur them on to get involved.

They collaborate with lots of people which will be a really great chance to network and speak to people from different creative fields. They come up with some really creative promotion ideas, the above screen shot is for a dinosaur exhibition, the concepts and ideas for their projects are really interesting.

YCN LEGO - WEBSITE DEVELOPMENT & CRIT FEEDBACK/RESPONE

The Design

In order to expand on the campaign I will propose a competition for children of all ages to get involved with. This will be mentioned in the stop motion video, it will display a link, and from here you can go away and find out more about the competition and the prizes available. I started mocking up the website on illustrator trying to make it as child friendly and as easy to understand as possible, as kids will be using it to submit there models.

Colours

 Primary
 Shades
 Secondary

After reading the brand guidelines I realised there were allot of rules that needed following. First and formost the colour scheme was quite strict. I decided to try and stick to the main primary colours as you see below with the red, yellow, blue and green.

Idea 1

This was the first design that I came up with for the website. I wasn't very happy with it at all, and after going to a CRIT it was made apparent that it was not very child friendly.

Crit Feed Back

Bad
Not very child friendly
Too Dull
Too much White space
Plain

Good
Good use of colours and brick button idea works well
They also loved the idea of a competition and thought this was a great way expanding on the advert and campaign.

Response to the Crit

After the crit I decided to scrap my old idea and just go with something completely different. After researching other successful lego websites I found they were allot more playful and less modern like my original design. I decided to design a kind of castle building that would get over the idea of the building aspect of the competition. But I began to hate the idea almost instantly, with the colour palette I had I found it very difficult to create anything that looked remotely nice as there were so many different garish colours that were not working together very well.

I decided to scrap that idea and to have a re-think. I decided it might be better to have a kind of mascot type character who is associated with the competition which could be something the kids can recognise. I ended up drawing a lego builder which slowly progressed, I ended up changing the arms as I was unhappy with the proportions and it did not work as well on the actual webpage.

I also thought in order to make it more kid friendly I went with a comic book style image as this something that children read on a daily basis, its a more fun and interesting format to read from rather than a scroll down box in a block etc. I decided to keep the buttons from the original as they are bold and can easily be recognised as buttons.

I decided to narrow down the amount of text on the home page and try and make
it as short and sweet as possible, so that the kids aren't put off reading it. I went with a comic
book style font as well to enhance the concept.

Logo Attempts

I tried coming up with a few different logos for "The Big Build" competition but I was pretty disappointed with how it was going. I was pretty pushed for time so I decided to not concentrate on it and jut push the concept of the whole campaign in my final concept boards.

I decided to add a lego grid background to break up the white as
I thought there was too much poking through.

Added Pages

Home Page
|
Gallery - Prizes - Rules - Submit

Above shows what pages link off the 'Home Page'
I've made it as simple as possible in order for children to use it.

When you click on the 'Gallery' brick it gets larger and up pops a series of different entrants models
on the left hand side there are a range of different age brackets within the competition. Arrows allow you to slide through the different models, and an 'X' button allows you to exit this option and go back to the home page.

When you click on a model you like, the others disappear and your choice gets larger, from here it displays the name and age of the builder and gives you the option to vote. The best buildings from each age bracket will win a prize. This could be a one of competition or an ongoing thing.

For the sake of the Brief I decided not to mock up all the other pages on the website as I was mainly pushing the concept of my campaign rather than the design and the concept this was only an idea or proposal to pitch to lego. They hopefully can get the idea of my style and thinking behind the whole campaign. I mocked the home page up on a mac to see what it would look like. I am happy with how it looks. It cannot be mistaken for anything but lego, its simple and definitely appeals to a younger target market. It looks good and functions with ease. Overall I think I have done a good job at fulfilling the brief.

RESPONSIVE SESSION - GROUP PARTNERS

Code : JOSH  Mikey

Why have you chosen to work with your creative partner? What are your aims?

I have chosen to work with Mikey as we are quite like minded and have similar sense of humour. We have also helped each other on briefs in the past, when coming up with concepts and ideas. Mikey has different set of skills to me also, I am looking forward to combining these to come up with something new and interesting and an outcome that would be different to what we would produce individually. Mikey is good at type and photography and I am better at production and image.

We already have a healthy working relationship. In the past we have helped each other crit and develop our work. Josh has skills in illustration and product production which are areas where my skill lacks. We both share an interest in branding and identity.

What are your specific areas of creative interest in this brief?

I like the fact the brief is quite secretive, its a hidden brand initially which allows for a creative outcome with no boundaries. This definitely makes the brief more fun and appealing. I am also quite interested in branding and I am looking forward to creating some sort of churchill campaign/brand.

I like the fact we have such an open brief with just a desired outcome. I like that we would be able to take a humorousapproach to this brief as well as inform a specific audience hopefully by using production and finishing techniques that I have not yet used.

What specific design skills do you have to offer in relation to your chosen brief? How do you intend to use them?

I think I am good at print production and finishes. I have experimented with all the different processes art college and have become quite comfortable in the print rooms. I think we will be doing a heavily print based outcome so my skills and experience will come into play towards the final stages. I'm also good at illustration, this is something we may be using with the project.

I think I am good at idea generation, which will help develop ideas. branding and identity could also come into play in this brief. Photography is another skill I could use even if it is just producing photos of our final product.

What specific non-design skills do you have to offer in relation to your chosen brief? How do you intend to use them?

I feel my presentation skills have improved tonnes during this course, and hopefully this will show when trying to get across our concepts in crits clearly and thoroughly. Equally Mikeys presentation skills are good so together I think we will be able to convey our project well. My phone skills are pretty good, due to telesales jobs, this will come in handy when ringing printers etc.

Critiquing - after an initial idea has been created I think I feel that one of my skills is my ability to crit work with an open mind and through past experience it seems that my ideas/ opinions are quite well received so I think working in a pair would develop these skills as well as help aid the development of the design and concept itself.
